A bibliometric analysis of One Health research, guided by the Joint Plan of Action

One Health is an integrated, unifying approach that aims to sustainably balance and optimize the health of people, animals, plants, and ecosystems. However, it is unclear if current One Health research trends primarily reflect its initial emphasis on zoonotic diseases and antimicrobial resistance or a broader, more holistic understanding, and how these align with the Quadripartite One Health Joint Plan of Action (OH JPA, 2022-2026). To assess this, we explored global trends in One Health research, analyzing 6168 publications (2010 – October 2024) from the Dimensions database through bibliometric analysis and social network mapping. We attributed publications to countries/institutions using a full-counting approach and quantified institutional collaboration using Social Network Analysis centrality measures. A topic model, visualized with the UMAP machine learning algorithm, was also developed to identify research themes. Our analysis of this bibliographic data revealed a global increase in One Health research publications, especially after 2018. Half of these publications focused on six primary topics, five aligning with OH JPA action tracks. While research on zoonotic epidemics and pandemics was prominent, other One Health areas are increasing, though environmental integration remains comparatively underrepresented. Global collaborations exist, yet disparities show research often conducted in Africa and Asia is led by high-income countries. Evidence for research use in policymaking was found but is limited, particularly for low- and middle-income countries.
